The San Benito girls golf season ended Tuesday in the Central Coast Section championship in Carmel Valley. This year, the Balers sent only one golfer – Emiley Palmquist – to the championship round.

For the second-consecutive year, Palmquist came up just short of qualifying for a spot in the Nor-Cal championship tournament.

Palmquist placed 19th out of 90 girls with a scored of 7-over par 79 at Rancho Canada Golf Course East. The San Benito senior finished seven strokes short of a berth into the next round.

Gunn’s Anna Zhou took first, carded a career-low 68. Valley Christian took home the team championship, beating Gunn by one stroke 402-403.

It took a long time, but the Balers double team of Berenice Bribiesca and Cathy Frusetta lost for the first time in a league match Tuesday in Salinas during the Monterey Bay League’s individual championship.

Bribiesca and Frusetta fell in the semifinals to the Cowboys’ Joy Johnson and Ansley Grover 7-5, 6-3.

The Balers’ No. 2 doubles team of Annie Tobias and Kelsey Slavich also lost 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

The Balers No. 1 singles player Audrey Marshall fell in the quarterfinals as well, losing to Alisal’s Samantha Camacho 6-7, 6-2, 10-7 in a close match.

“Those two seem to play really good against each other,” SBHS head coach Ed Cecena said.

The Balers were eliminated in the MBL tournament, but thanks to a second-place league finish, the Balers will begin CCS play Saturday. Look for an update on the match’s opponent, time and place soon.

The Balers improved to 10-2 inside the MBL’s Gabilan Division, grabbing a 3-0 victory over Seaside on Tuesday. The victory sets up a battle with Notre Dame for sole possession of second place on Thursday.

If the Balers win, San Benito will clinch second place behind undefeated Salinas.

Tuesday’s victory (25-9, 25-16, 25-14) came after a 3-2 showing at the Milipitas Spikefest II. San Benito defeated Saratoga (2-0), Westmont (2-0) and Crystal Spring Uplands School (2-0) to improve their overall record to 20-12.
