Former Hollister resident
Former Hollister resident Ruby Elizabeth Yockey died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 in Susanville. She was 78.
Mrs. Yockey was born in Olatha, Colo. and grew up in Hollister. She graduated from San Benito High School and started her first job while still in school, as a receptionist for Dr. John Harruf, and later worked for many doctors and hospitals in the Bay Area.
In the early 1980s she founded the Old Mill Cafe in Westwood (Los Angeles County). After selling the cafe she worked for the Westwood Senior Nutrition Program and later worked making cookie bouquets in Reno. She also made more than 100 wedding cakes and never charged for them. She enjoyed playing the piano for the many churches she belonged to over the years, hosting parties and get-togethers, painting and collecting butterflies.
She is survived by her husband of more than 58 years, Albert Yockey of Susanville; her son, Jim Burgess of Seattle, Wash.; her daughters, Janet Chappell and Elta Silva, both of Westwood, and Cherie Spencer of Susanville; her stepdaughters, Yvonne Culp and Bettie Yockey, both of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Private family services have been held.
