Local commuters got off to a shaky start Thursday morning when a 3.5 magnitude earthquake rocked San Benito County.

The 7:33 a.m. quake, centered approximately three miles southeast of Hollister, did more to rattle residents’ nerves than damage local property, according to local police and fire departments.

Other than a few a few broken dishes and one or two cracked windows, the Hollister Police Department said there were no reports of any serious damage.

Hollister Fire Department officials said they had no reports of any emergencies related to the earthquake.

One jar of jelly that fell off a grocery store shelf was the extent of the damage felt by local grocers. Representatives at Nob Hill and Safeway said there were no signs of damage to either store or their merchandise.

Hazel Hawkins Hospital said there was no serious influx of patients to its emergency room or the main lobby and it was business as usual for hospital staff and patients.

The early morning earthquake happened along a nearby section of the Calaveras fault, according to the US Geological Survey.

Reports of the earthquake came from as far away as 199 miles to the north in Petaluma and just 27 miles to the south, in Salinas.
