Locals will gear up for barbecues, fiestas and all manner of equine fun as the 71st annual Saddle Horse Show Parade trots into town Thursday. And over the following three days, Bolado Park south of Tres Piños will host the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo.

Thursday’s parade, one of Hollister’s biggest and most anticipated events, will feature about 80 entries strutting their stuff down San Benito Street at 6:15 p.m. And when the parade ends, the small-town fun will have just begun. There will be pie eating- and watermelon-eating contests and a fiesta in the plaza next to the Veterans Memorial Building that same evening.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Bolado Park will host the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo. This year’s event will have many kid-oriented activities like face painting and pony rides. The big kids will show off their skills in rodeo events. Spectators can take a break from the rodeo and shop at the Hand Crafted Equipment and Western Arts Fair.

That sounds like a good time to us.

The parade and rodeo are a long-time local tradition that gives everyone a change to revel in the area’s strong agrarian heritage. It’s hugely popular, and a great display of the area’s community spirit and character.

So cowboy up y’all and come out for a truly good time.
