Modeso – It doesn’t appear home-field advantage had much of an affect.
On Thursday, the San Benito 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars thumped Modesto 14-2 in the championship game at the 2007 Central California State Qualifier Tournament, hosted in Modesto.
The game was called in five innings, and will send San Benito to the state tournament, slated for July 21 in Madera.
Needless to say, Manager Jerry Sepulveda likes his teams chances at state, especially after his San Benito All-Stars mowed down the competition in this tournament, going 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 34-2.
“We’re going to see some good competition,” Sepulveda said of the state tournament. “If we continue to play the way we’re playing right now, we’re going to be very competitive.”
On Thursday in Modesto, San Benito plated 14 runs in four innings, including seven runs in the fourth alone.
The local All-Stars also plated three runs in the first and four more in the second.
Ricky Garcia went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Daniel Arevalo went 3-for-4. Eddie Vargas also contributed, getting two of San Benito’s 10 total hits in the game.
On the mound, Arevalo threw three innings, allowed three hits, and struck out three batters. Rolando Robles came in for relief, and struck out two batters over two innings pitched.
Sepulveda thanked his coaching staff as well, which includes Ed Vargas and Keith Stevens.
San Benito will now shift its attention to the state tournament, where Sepulveda expects his team to be competitive.
“We did make a couple of errors, but for the most part, we played pretty sound baseball throughout the tournament,” Sepulveda said of the state-qualifying tournament. “They have fun, but as soon as they get onto that baseball field, they’re focused.”
