Hollister – San Benito High School honored students and staff Tuesday who exemplify the school’s Baler Code of being respectful, responsible, honest, civil and tolerant.

Every semester, teachers in each division choose their best students to receive the Department’s Student Recognition Award. Students selected for the awards have demonstrated well-rounded, outstanding performance in a particular field as well as in the school and the community. These students are a credit to themselves, their parents, San Benito High School and to their community, according to a SBHS press release.

“It’s another effort to give students recognition,” said Vice Principal Duane Morgan.

The awards were handed out on May 24.

After a busy year of splitting time between school, work and her duties as the school’s Associated Student Body staff relations commissioner, being recognized for her work on the student government made a stressful semester worth while for junior Yadira Zendejas who won the ASB division award for student activities.

“It was a hard year with all my activities this year,” she said. “It (the award) motivates me to keep doing what I’m doing. It’s a thank-you that made it all worth while.”

About 46 students received division awards for subjects ranging from physics to cabinet making; each student honored received a certificate of recognition.

In addition to the division awards, seven students and five staff members were honored with the Baler Code Award, for their commitment to the school’s credo: A Baler is: Respectful, responsible, honest, civil and tolerant. Student members of the school’s student advisory committee chose which students and staff received the award.

For Library Media Teacher Doug Achterman receiving the Baler code award is proof that his effort to lead by example is appreciated by students.

“I definitely think about modeling good behavior,” he said. “I do try to show my best side. This is really flattering to me.”
