San Juan Bautista residents are “way ahead” of the pace for the city’s annual Clean Sweep Week, according to city clerk Shawna Serna.

Residents are already making their way to the city’s public works department at 700 Second St. with junk to put into the two Dumpsters available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. – and Clean Sweep week isn’t until April 28-May 3.

“People have been filling them up already with a bunch of things,” Serna said. “They fill it up and then we send the containers to the landfill.”

Serna said the city decided to advertise early to get a good response for the event

“It seems to be working,” she said.

Items acceptable for disposal are yard and garden trimmings, water-based paint and normal curbside garbage. Appliances are also permitted, but reservations must be made at San Juan City Hall.

Furniture, construction materials and carpeting are not allowed, nor are toxic or hazardous materials such as oil-based paints, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, weed killers and motor oil. Oil can be disposed of, however, in containers available at City Hall.

“We’ve been doing this for quite a while, that it’s down to a routine,” said City Manager Larry Cain. “This gives people a chance to get rid of things they’ve accumulated over the years.”

Curbside pick-up of excess cans and garbage bags is offered at no cost on Monday, April 28. Cans should not exceed 60 pounds, or 32 gallons in volume. Yard waste and large branches should be bundled.

For more information on hazardous waste disposal, call the San Benito County Waste Management Department at 636-4110. For appliance disposal, call 623-4661.
