Well, here we are. It’s our first full week of spring and it sure is looking good down here in South County, finally! The grass is green, wildflowers are starting to bloom and the cattle are starting to look good. We had another nice shot of rain over the weekend to keep everyone around here happy as well. If it keeps up like this, we may have a good year after all.

We spent last weekend in Plymouth for the Challenge of the Champions invitational high school rodeo. We were very lucky that the rain waited until the last day to make a mud puddle of the arena. Usually it’s like that the entire weekend. Many San Benito County kids participated in the event, but the only one who really had some good fortune over the weekend was Tommy Ford. Tommy rode both of his bareback horses and ended up third in the overall average. Way to go, Tommy! Brody and Cash both drew some really rank bulls so neither of them made it back to the short round. Taylor Hurley and Mikael Bernadette both made the short round in the breakaway but neither of them had any luck. Blair Brown and Lacey Bourdet were the only all-girls team that made it to the short round in the team roping, but they had some bad luck in the short round as well. Others who participated from San Benito County were Blair Strohhn, Megan Ford and Tawnee Haynish. Everyone had a great time while making some great memories as well. Next rodeo for the D4 team will be in Salinas the weekend of April 13-15.

A huge congratulations goes out to Danielle Craig who had an awesome weekend down in Paso Robles at the USTRC team roping. Danielle and her partner, Dalton Pierce, won the #10 roping which paid more than $2,000 a man! She also won a beautiful Gist buckle and earned a spot for herself at the USTRC National Finals in Oklahoma. Way to go, Danielle!

The San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association is hosting their annual reverse draw dinner dance this Saturday night at Bolado Park. It is always a fun event that features delicious food and fun entertainment. The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association is hosting their annual spring meeting and dinner on Friday night at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City, followed by their ranch rodeo on Saturday.

The weather man is calling for more rain this weekend. Enjoy it while it lasts! If you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
