The rate of San Benito County foreclosure filings fell in January from the prior month by 31 percent, but it remained 35 percent higher than the same period a year ago as federal officials and regulators have been attempting to work with lenders toward keeping residents in their homes.
In San Benito County, there were 142 homes in the foreclosure process in January, down from 206 in December, according to data from Irvine-based RealtyTrac.
The drop in January may relate somewhat to federal efforts in negotiating with an array of lending institutions toward trying to stem the foreclosure tide and keep as many people out of the process as possible.
San Benito County also, however, moved from having the eighth-worst per capita foreclosure rate in California to having the 11th-worst in January as one of every 126 homes are in foreclosure, according to RealtyTrac. Merced County is ranked worst among 58 counties in the state.
As a whole in California, the state with the second-worst foreclosure rate nationwide, there were 76,761 filings in January, a decrease of 14 percent from December, according to RealtyTrac.
