Band teacher James Zuniga conducts a class in 2007.

San Benito High School’s longtime music teacher, Jim Zuniga, is seeking retirement at the end of this school year, according to background information in the district’s agenda packet for the board meeting this week.
Shawn Tennenbaum, the district’s director of human resources, will bring a list of appointments, resignations, retirements, leaves and assignments—including Zuniga’s retirement—before the board as a consent / action item during the regular board meeting Jan. 26.
The retirement would go into effect June 3. The band and choir director has been at the school for at least 15 years, according to an interview he gave in December.
Zuniga’s roles at the school have given him leadership positions with the school’s Scarlet Regiment Band, Color Guard, Jazz Orchestra, Drumline, Concert Choir, Competition Jazz Choir and String Orchestra, according to the school’s website.
