Initially scheduled to be playing on the road in Salinas, the San Benito High School football program will instead host three games on Friday night — freshman, junior varsity and varsity — after a shooting took place this morning on the campus of Alisal High School.
San Benito and Alisal were slated to play at Alisal on Friday night, but school officials decided to move the game to Hollister after this morning’s incident.
“They called us immediately,” San Benito Athletic Director Tod Thatcher said.
“They requested we play here, so we’re gonna do everything we can to host a good event for them.”
The three games will happen in succession, with the freshmen football game scheduled for 3 p.m., the junior varsity game to follow at 5, and the varsity matchup to be held at 7:30 p.m.
The scheduling change comes on the heels of a report out of Salinas that a male teenager was shot multiple times on an athletic field at Alisal High School at 8 a.m., Friday. The teenager was said to have been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to The Californian.
“They wanted to not cancel the game but have it and try to keep as much normalcy as possible,” Thatcher said. “We’re glad to help them.”
