San Benito High School students cross Nash Road in 2012.

San Benito High School District trustees heard a report on the location of campus supervisors and their job duties during their meeting last week.
Trustee Juan Robledo thanked staff officials for providing the presentation, which was given at the board’s request.
“It gives us a good idea of how our students are being protected on any day,” Robledo said. “It would be good to keep our students as safe as possible because I think we’re going to keep growing.”
Campus supervisors are charged with helping students cross Nash Road, checking the restrooms for youth after lunch, reporting anyone walking near the campus who isn’t a staff member or student, and checking for off-campus parking in prohibited areas such as alleyways. As part of the presentation, trustees also saw the names of administrators on the map performing supervision during lunch and breaks.
“What we’re seeing here,” said Assistant Principal Jeremy Dirks, as he pointed to the map with administrator names, “it’s not common.”
Trustee Evelyn Muro said she heard from students that supervision of campus bathrooms needed more attention and “that there are things going on in the restrooms that shouldn’t be going on,” she said.
Superintendent John Perales said the district needs to teach students that when the bell rings, they have to get to class.
“It’s almost like training them: ‘Bell rang, you gotta move,’” he said.
Muro suggested that teachers might need to join the anti-tardy movement as well by starting classes right away so students miss valuable instruction time if they arrive late.
The number of tardy students has decreased, so “that’s going well,” Dirks said.
Employees are also rotated through different parts of the campus for supervision, the assistant principal explained as he presented a sample map.
“It’s a living document, so to speak,” he said.
