Just before 11 a.m. today, police received calls of shots fired in the neighborhood of the 1000 block of West Street across the street from San Benito High School, and it resulted in a brief lockdown at two area schools. Investigators, though, later confirmed there were no shots fired.

The Hollister Police Department quickly locked down San Benito High School and nearby R.O. Hardin Elementary School before arriving on scene.

The schools were locked down for roughly 10 to 15 minutes, Hollister police Sgt. David Westrick said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a man had kicked down a door in the neighborhood, resulting in the loud noise, Westrick said. Police are still investigating if the suspect took anything from the residence. Westrick on Monday afternoon confirmed police do not believe shots were fired.

Witness reported a man fled the area before police arrived. The man is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall and a Hispanic, adult male with dark clothing and gray sweat pants.

Police responded to the call within minutes and swiftly shut down the school for the children’s safety, Westrick said.

“We wanted to keep the school safe, so we immediately shut it down,” he said.
