honor for her 90th birthday on April 18, with her family and her
bridge buddies from the Gilroy Senior Center. Her actual birthday
was April 20.

HONORS

Jessie Rush

Army Pvt. Jessie A. Rush has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills.

He is the son of Christina Soares of Gilroy and a 2009 graduate of Mount Madonna High School.

Joseph Salyer

Joseph Salyer, PSSA, Dwight D. Eisenhower, was featured in the March 2 issue of the “5 Star” newsletter aboard the Ike Carrier. Joe was sworn in on March 17, 2009 and will serve aboard the IKE for four years.

He is the son of Nancy Salyer and Woodrow Salyer, of Morgan Hill.

Stephen Harrison

Army Pfc. Stephen G. Harrison has returned to Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, after being deployed to Afghanistan for one year. The soldier is one of 3,500 members of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Richardson. Airborne combat team members included soldiers assigned to one of six battalions and regiments of the 25th Infantry Division.

The airborne brigade served in three eastern provinces of Afghanistan, which included the Paktya, Paktika and Khost.

Harrison, an infantryman, is normally assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

He is the son of Troy C. and Erika J. Harrison of Morgan Hill and a 2006 graduate of Central High School.

Mark Johanson

Junior Mark Johanson of Morgan Hill, recently participated in the St. Matthew Passion performance at Valparaiso University. Johanson is a tenor in the University Chorale.

The monumental St. Matthew Passion was presented by the Bach Institute with guest conductor, Hermann Max, music director of the Rheinische Kantorei and Das Kleine Konzert as well as the 2008 recipient of the Bach Medal, which was awarded by the city of Leipzig, Germany. The Valparaiso University Chorale, Bach Choir and Symphony Orchestra served as the performing forces, along with members of the Valpo music faculty.

Johanson is majoring in music education at Valpo. He is the son of David and Margaret Johanson of Morgan Hill.

Tim Sakahara

Former Gilroy resident and Hawaii News Now reporter Tim Sakahara and photojournalist Oscar Valenzuela have won an Edward R. Murrow Best Hard News Reporting Award for their coverage of the American Samoa earthquake and tsunami in September 2009. Taking the first flight to the island after the disaster, the team began filing reports and helped connect people with their families in Samoa via e-mail, Skype and through in-depth storytelling.

Rebecca Koch

Army Pvt. Rebecca K. Koch has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo., which included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).

During training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, physical fitness, first aid and Army doctrine. During AIT, the soldier completed a military police specialist course.

Koch is the daughter of Katherine L. Eldridge of Redway and Fredrick J. Koch III of Morgan Hill. She is a 2009 graduate of South Fork High School.
