The San Benito High School Drama department presents “Seussical,” a musical based on the works of Dr. Seuss. The show runs March 31 to April 2, at 7 p.m., in the San Benito High School auditorium.
The performance depicts stories from some of the most popular stories from the well-known children’s author Dr. Seuss. The show is generally centered on the classic “Horton Hears a Who,” with some twists and changes added by the drama students. The performance will feature many well-known characters such as ‘Horton,’ the ‘Whos,’ the ‘Grinch’ and the ‘Cat in the Hat.’
“The play is so fun and so up beat,” said Rebecca Cavanaugh, a sophomore. “It is a great play for the entire family.”
Cavanaugh is the assistant choreographer and plays a jungle animal. She explained that she has always had an interest in drama and performing. She immediately got involved with the drama club and described it as “one big family.”
“The performance is more than just a musical,” said Kristen Porter, the drama teacher. “The lyrics are so important to the plot of the story.”
She said that the play is not like a traditional musical. Instead of acting a scene, then singing a scene, the play has many more musical scenes that tell the story.
“The Seussical really reconnects people to their childhoods and it really proves that Dr. Seuss is not just for little kids,” Porter said.
Porter has been teaching drama for 18 years. This will be her fourth year teaching at SBHS. She received her major in theater arts. She explained that the theater “opens students up to each other and makes them more supportive and accepting of each other.”
Tickets can be bought in advance through the SBHS student payment center. Prices include $7 with an ASB card or for children under 12, $8 for students or senior citizens and $9 for general admission. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $9.
