The 21st annual Rideshare Week is Oct. 6-10, during which residents are asked to find an alternative to driving their cars to work. San Benito and Monterey counties will again give away several prizes to participants, including a $4,000 travel voucher.

The county is once again taking part in the statewide campaign, which is intended to promote a decrease in traffic congestion and road stress, as well as to promote energy conservation.

To qualify, participants must commit to using an alternative mode of transportation, which can include carpooling, at least one day out of the five-day work-week. The county will also provide a free list of residents who are carpooling during the week.

“We know what road rage is like these days,” said Lisa Berg, county transportation planner.

Berg mentioned several reasons why residents typically ride solo to work, including differing work schedules and the need for some residents to use a vehicle for work. Also, she said, “Some people just like their cars.”

Last year, about 200 people from San Benito County took part, along with about 1,500 from Monterey County, she said. This years theme is – “Explore a road less traveled: It could lead you around the world.”

Aside from the travel voucher, the county is also offering other prizes that include a gift certificate from Pebble Beach, a foursome golfing pass to San Juan Oaks Golf Club and transit passes.

The grand prize travel voucher is intended, for promotional reasons, to buy a trip around the world. The winner, however, can use it how he or she wishes, Berg said.

Residents interested in signing up for Rideshare Week can get the appropriate materials at the county Administrative Building, City Hall or the county Transportation Department. The county will also have a booth promoting the week at the County Fair this weekend and it maintains a Web site, www.rideshareweek.com.
