Sheriff candidate Robert Scattini submitted his campaign finance disclosure statement a week after the deadline, while he had raised a total of about $14,883 through May 22, according to the documents.

Scattini’s campaign was the last to submit the disclosure statement among the nine candidates running for contested, local offices. He is running against three competitors in the June 8 primary to succeed Sheriff Curtis Hill, who is retiring.

Due to his late submission, Scattini faces a fine of $10 for each day it was tardy, according to the local elections office policy. The Fair Political Practices Commission also reserves the right to penalize the candidate up to $5,000.

“I really don’t have an answer,” said Scattini, whose forms were submitted today. “I’m totally responsible for it, I guess. You put campaign people in charge of certain things.”

Scattini was referring to his treasurer, Ramiro Rodriguez. He added, regarding Rodriguez: “In all fairness to him, he was very, very, extremely busy with a vacation.”

Scattini during the latest disclosure period, starting March 18, raised $4,463 in total, including $1,640 in non-monetary contributions for a radio advertisement and food and drinks at a barbecue, according to his statement.

Through the entire year, though, Scattini’s numbers – around $15,000 raised in total – are similar to three other sheriff candidate. Undersheriff Pat Turturici, though, has raised far more than the other contenders.

Turturici had raised a total of $27,245 during the latest period, including $15,277 in cash and $10,000 in loans. That brought his total for the year to about $63,000 while his ending cash balance was $10,420, according to records.

Watsonville police Lt. Darren Thompson raised the second most in the period, with $12,280. His total for the year was $14,508 and he had a balance of $445 at the period’s end.

Hollister police Sgt. Ray Wood raised $10,723 during the latest period. His total raised for the year was $14,873 and he had an ending balance in his campaign account of $1,674, according to documents.
