Red Phone’s back on another fine Saturday morning ready to answer your calls. Got a question, need an answer, call the Red Phone. Always listening, always online, always at 635-9219.

Keep on keeping on, Red Phone

Though the Crimson Crusader does not seek fame, nor fortune, in its quest to improve life in San Benito County, it doesn’t mind the occasional compliment from callers.

“The Union Pacific article in today’s paper was fantastic. I think you should run it with a larger phone number of how to get a hold of John Bromley and keep on this guy because of the damage this has caused to the suspension of our cars and the danger of having people almost rear-end you when you drive around them is horrible.”

After talking with Bromley last week, Red Phone heard some encouraging news from the public relations director of Union Pacific. However, after Red Phone left a message with Bromley to check on his promise that UP would send employees out to look at the damage and beginning planning repairs, he never called back. So Red Phone, will do readers one better this week. Last time Red Phone printed Bromley’s office number of 402-544-3475, but this time we’ll give his cell phone 402-305-0838. Call him early and often, and tell him to call the Red Phone back.

Santa Ana Solutions

So the saga continues with the pool of water forming most mornings at the corner of San Felipe and Santa Ana roads. Although, SBC Assistant Public Works Director Steve Whittry said the puddle wasn’t present during the recent rains, Red Phone never got the chance to check.

When Red Phone raised the issue a month ago, Whittry said then, that the water had been determined to be coming from the drinking water machine at Ranch Milk gas station. The owner had two weeks to present a mitigation plan to the city, which Whittry said was done but he doesn’t know the details, and the owner had a month to put the plan into effect. Times up according to Red Phone’s calendar, but no one could provide much detail on what’s been done. Whittry said the owner has done what he was supposed to, whatever that means.

“He’s done that and he’s working with an engineer in our office,” Whittry said. “I noticed after the storm there was no water down there which is a good sign, but I haven’t talked to our engineer yet so I don’t have an update.”

Which makes Red Phone worry there isn’t an update to give … maybe. The engineer was also off from work until Tuesday. So Red Phone has him on a list, but in the meantime, if you see water at the corner of Lake Santa Ana call Steve Whittry at 636-4340 and tell ’em the “plan” isn’t working. More to come.
