Racers shatter the peace in South County

Can you believe it? It’s the first of June already, schools will be out for the summer beginning this week. Hooray! Unfortunately, it’s going to be one long, hot summer. With such little rainfall this year, it’s going to be dry, dusty and hot.

Get well wishes go out to Alma Carlsen who had surgery a few weeks ago. She was home and recovering well when she was struck with a collapsed lung and ended up back in Salinas in the ICU. Jerry said she was doing well though and expected to be released this week. Get well quickly Alma! We’re all thinking about you.

Congratulations go out to Jacob Turner of Hollister High FFA who did very well at the Salinas Valley Fair a few weeks ago. His heifer was named Reserve Supreme Replacement Heifer. The members of the Hollister FFA, along with his teacher, Renee Reed, were very proud of his accomplishment. Also showing at the fair with the Hollister FFA included Erica Bianchi, Alethea Prewett and Joey Mancino.

Marianne Madson, Tim Williams and I headed down to Southern California last week with the eighth-graders from Bitterwater Tully School for their eighth-grade trip. We all flew out of San Jose last Tuesday morning for a three-day trip to Disneyland, California Adventure and Universal Studios. We had a wonderful time and the weather was perfect.

One of the highlights of the trip was lunch at Tommy Ray’s Cafe on Ventura Boulevard. Tommy, a former San Diego Padre, is a close family friend of 8th grader Katie Donham. Katie was able to set us up with a fantastic lunch at the restaurant and a visit with Tommy. I had, without a doubt, the best steak sandwich I have ever eaten. Hey friends of Bob down in Hollywood, if you haven’t tried Tommy’s yet, be sure to give it a try. The service was fantastic and the food was even better. A big thanks to Katie and to Tommy for a great treat. We had lots of other fun on the trip besides our great lunch. The girls all agreed that the roller coaster, California Screamin, and the Tower of Terror, both located at California Adventure, were the best rides. Jurassic Park at Universal Studios was a very close second. It was a trip the girls will always remember and I’m glad I was able to tag along as a chaperone. I had a great time, too.

Graduation ceremonies and a summer concert will be held this Friday evening at Bitterwater Tully School beginning at 6 p.m. The three graduates will include Katie Donham, Natalie Madson and Sierra Jo Sans. A barbecue will be held immediately following the ceremonies at the school. Everyone in the community is, as always, invited and encouraged to attend.

Hwy. 25 was full of motorcycles last weekend. I don’t mind the Harleys on the road as they are very respectful, courteous and safe. I do mind the super fast bikes that fly by you without a moment’s notice doing well over 100 mph. I had a group of about 20 riders ride up behind me and scare the you-know-what out of me on Bitterwater grade last Sunday afternoon. Not long after, at the bottom of the grade, there was a crazy lady (we all know who she is, ha ha!) throwing dirt clods at them as they flew past her place. They slowed down for just a minute as they waved not such nice waves back to her. Beware motorcycle riders on Hwy. 25, there is an unhappy lady keeping watch for you out there! We either need more police presence out here on weekends to slow these guys down, or start some sort of petition to get them off our roads. I know that’s impossible, but I wonder what it’s going to take to get the law enforcement’s attention out here.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be in the form of a tragedy and more than likely to one of our locals. There have been plenty of bikers killed out here due to their stupidity, but that’s obviously not slowing them down. We’re all tired of it out here – slow down or stay off the roads!

I hope you all got your entries in for the annual Memorial Ropings at the Blackburn Ranch on June 16. Entries closed on June 1. Entries for the San Benito Saddle horse Show and Rodeo close this Friday, June 8. Be sure to get your entries in on time!

Have a great week, and be sure to come by Bitterwater Tully School this Friday to congratulate your favorite graduate! If you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
