High school rodeo season starts off the year well
How about this weather? It sure feels like fall now. We had
six-hundredths of rain at our place last night. It sure is going to
start the grass growing. It’s a little early, but, let’s hope it’s
a start to a good year. I love this time of year and the comfort
food I fix to go along with it. A good old buck stew in the
crockpot sure makes the house smell good and the tummy feel even
better!

The San Benito County Fair had a good run last week. Many South County 4-H’ers participated in the fair last week and they all did real well. Some of those participating from Bitterwater 4-H included Megan and Tel Jones, Wacey Barrington, Ian Paz, Emily Brewen and Twyster Hurley. Congratulations to Wacey Barrington for doing so well in his swine showmanship class that he ended up winning the intermediate class. Good job, Wacey. And Emily Brewen is quite the showman as well as she ended up winning her class and doing very well in the round robin as well.

Becky Doty had a good fair, too, as she did really well in the stock horse classes and ended up winning not one, but two buckles! Way to go, Beck. Your best friend would be very proud of you!

Many South County ladies spent last weekend in Tulare at the National Barrel Horse Association’s State finals. Some of those competing included Jene Mathis, Casey Mathis and Cynthia Fancher. A big congratulations goes out to little Casey Mathis for her big win in the peewee class. She brought home the first of probably many more saddles to come.

Wacey Barrington and Cheyenne Rey spent last weekend down in Santa Ynez at their first high school rodeo of the season for district 7. They both started off their year really well. District 4 members will be headed to Oakdale this weekend for their second rodeo of the year. The kids are selling raffle tickets right now for the California High School Rodeo Scholarship fund. Tickets are $10 each and the winner has a choice between a Kubota or $5,000.00 cash. The drawing will be held in June at the state finals. You can get your tickets from any high school rodeo contestant or get in touch with me and I’ll get you a ticket.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Oct. 23 for the Sixth Annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon hosted by the San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association. The event will be at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Tickets are $25 each and reservations are required as seating is limited. There will be great raffle prizes and delicious food.
