Footballs and fall are in the air

The King City Pop Warner football team opened up their season last week at the jamboree held at Soledad High School. Teams participating included King City, Greenfield, Soledad and Gonzales. Gonzales was the dominate team for the big squad; their boys were huge! King City looked good too, and they’ll only get better. I think the Colts were the best looking team out there. Of course I’m a little biased in that statement, but they sure do look good in their royal blue-and-white uniforms and they looked really sharp warming up as a team as well. In the smaller division, King City and Gonzales tied, going 2-1 for the day. It was a fun day of football, despite the heat. It was 90 degrees on Sunday. How’s that for a cool fall day! Next week, the games will be played in Gonzales. King City will be playing the second game of the day so be sure to go support our boys if your looking to take in some good football action.
If you’ve driven out in Bitterwater or along Hwy. 25 lately, have you noticed all the trash that’s being dumped out here? It’s disgusting. We had a whole load of trash dumped inside one of our fence lines last week. We were halfway tempted to go through the junk to see if we could find a name or address of who ever did it, then, load up their trash and take it back and dump it on their lawn to see how they’d like it. Just for everyone’s information, Bitterwater Valley is not a public dump; pay for your garbage fees just like everyone else does and don’t bring your trash out here!
There were several small earthquakes out here last week. The kids felt a big one at school one day, then there was an even bigger one on Saturday. I hope they weren’t leading up to another big one.
Several South County residents spent last weekend in Carmel Valley participating at the Carmel Valley Ranchers Days Rodeo. Some of those participating included: Nessen Schmidt, Val Basetti, Andy and Mattie Barrington, Annie Nino, Hec and Taylor Jo Hurley and J.W. Brewen. Congratulations goes out to Annie Nino for winning her first buckle in the junior calf branding event with partner Mattie Barrington, and to J.W. Brewen for winning the All-Around Saddle.
In buck news, seems the girls got all the bucks last week as Mattie Barrington got a nice one up at her grandparents, Jim and Betty’s place last week while Marianne Madson got a nice one at their place in San Lucas. John and Marianne’s freezer is going to be full of good meat this winter as John got himself a nice elk in Idaho last week too.
To all my Hollister readers, don’t think I slighted you in last week’s column about the Monterey County Cattlemens Rodeo. Apparently there must not have been enough room in the paper. I’m either too long-winded or Dear Abby takes precedence over local news!
Have a great week and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at we********@ao*.com with any news you’d like to share.
