Talk about a change in weather! Fall is definitely in the air.
It was cold, windy and wet on Saturday down here in South
County.
Once again, folks are on the go again down here. There’s always
something to write about down here.

The cool weather probably brought some welcome relief to the firefighters in Morgan Hill and in the Los Angeles area as well as to Alex Schmidt and Ellen Schwarz. Alex’s wife Stacey and Ellen’s husband William, both BLM employees, were both sent to L.A. to work on that fire. I’m sure they’ll both be glad when fire season ends this year!

Denise Donham hosted the annual pancake breakfast last Friday at Bitterwater Tully School. What a turnout we had, most definitely the biggest

one that I’ve ever been to. Like I’ve always said about this small community, when someone or something needs to be supported, you can always count on the folks out here to jump in. Some of those who stopped by for hot cakes, sausage and juice included: Armond and Alberta Rist, Bill and Robin Rist, Joe Maggini, Jeff Schmidt, Laurence and Donna Hansen, Jo Ann Scattini and the Guidry Family. Thanks to all of you for coming by and supporting our school.

Lance and Jessica Miller left last Friday for another rodeo run. This time they headed down South. They were up in Bakersfield Friday night, Barstow Saturday afternoon and San Bernadino on Sunday afternoon. Then it’s right back here to South County so Lance can be to work in Santa Cruz on Monday morning…ugh! I think they finally gave up on asking me to go with them, once they realized my radius of traveling only goes as far as Hollister and Paso!

Just a reminder, the October meeting of the Home Department will be held

on Oct. 11 at Bear Valley Hall. The meeting date had to be changed from its original Wednesday due to the fair. Guest speaker this month will be Ann Williams and she will be speaking on the Federal Reserve. The meeting will start at 10:30 followed by the usual potluck.

A huge congratulations goes out to Laurence and Donna Hansen, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday at Tully Hall,

where their four children hosted a huge party. More than 100 people attended the party. Some of those who attended from South County included: Ruth Records, Roberta Oswald, Alice Gaunt, Nita Tully, Jeff and Jean Schmidt, Jeff, Shari and Melissa Popnoe, Jim and Lisa Smith, Hec and Kasey Hurley, Jim and Betty Barrington, Armond and Alberta Rist, Nessen Schmidt, Tracie Eade-Jones, Joe and Darlene Maggini, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Gladys and Keith O’Connor, Jerry and Alma Carlsen, Donna Palmer the entire Beaver Damn Fire Department and me and Todd.

David and Cynnie O’Connor catered the event with the help of Robert Vanetti and Tressy O’Connor. There was a beautiful cake with edible wedding pictures from 50 years ago transferred onto it. We were all afraid to eat any of the cake as it was so pretty, but thanks to Cynnie, we all got to have a piece! Since Todd and I just celebrated our 10th anniversary last week, I was curious as to the secret of a 50-year marriage. I won’t tell you Laurence’s secret (you can ask him yourself, if I print it, the 50 years might be cut short real quick!), but Donna’s secret is worth telling. Donna’s secret to a successful marriage is “selective hearing.” Ssounds good to me! Congratulations guys, here’s wishing you another 50!

The San Benito County Fair starts today, best of luck to everyone who

has something entered there. Until next week, if you have any news you’d
