Well I think winter has finally arrived here in South County! Isn’t the rain beautiful? It’s about time too; we didn’t have much more time to spare down here.

There was a lot happening down here last week, lots of celebrations and some folks doing some traveling as well.

First off though, on a sad note, one of South County’s icons, Horace Bacon, passed away last Saturday in Hollister. Horace and his family have lived in South County for generations. He was a true cowboy and he will be greatly missed by all. Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Black-Cooper-Sander Funeral Home. Our condolences go out to the entire Bacon Family.

Vern and Jo Ann Scattini made a quick trip to Lakeview, Ore., last week for

the funeral of one of their close friends, Jim Alves. Jim was killed in an auto accident last Monday and he was buried on his birthday, Friday the 13th.

Vern and Jo Ann headed up on Thursday and got as far as Weed, where they spent the night with former South County residents Snooks and Betty Smith. On Friday, the four of them traveled to Lakeview for the services. They spent Friday night with Snooks and Betty again before heading back home early Saturday morning. Not the kind of trip anyone wants to make, sad circumstances for the trip and tough driving conditions as well.

Marianne Madson and I hosted the Bitterwater Tully School Christmas program last Friday night at Tully Hall. This year the kids performed a wonderful variety show for the crowd. Everyone involved did a great job and Mr. Williams really wanted to thank Alma Carlson and Donna Palmer for their help with this year’s performance. These two ladies love to help out in the music and drama departments and they always do a great job. Of course Santa made a special appearance at the Hall and many children were delighted to see him.

Laurence and Donna Hansen were unable to attend the Christmas performance as they spent the evening at the Mee Memorial Hospital Volunteers Christmas Party. I’m sure they enjoyed themselves there but probably missed the kids performances just as much.

We headed up to Salinas on Saturday for Brody’s 6th (I can’t believe

it!) birthday. He and a few friends and cousins celebrated at Cowboy Pizza, where they all took part in riding the mechanical bull. They all had a great time and us parents not only enjoyed the party but the beautiful rain on the drive home.

Speaking of rain, some totals to report so far for last weekend include

.80 hundredths down at the O’Connor Ranch, .80 hundredths at the Baumgartner

Ranch, and we had .55 hundredths at our place. According to the weather reports, more is on the way…keep it coming!

Bill and Robin Rist might have played a big part in the rainfall last week as Bill said he was going to “dare it to rain” last Friday by branding his calves. Well, he dared and it rained! Some of those who attended the branding and got wet enough to prove it included: John Nino, Jim Bob Wilson, John and Marianne Madson and Hec and Kasey Hurley.

Many of you, like us, might have spent the last 10 days watching the National Finals Rodeo on television. I don’t know about you, but I for one

am very glad its over! I usually go to bed about 8 in the evening and this staying up till midnight for the last 10 days just about killed me! It was worth it though, its always exciting to see who ends up the World Champion in each event. Of course Sierra and I were especially excited to see Charmayne James finally win another gold buckle. It’s about time for her.

The team roping was good too, but we sure would have liked to have seen

Wheatley and Lockett pull that one off. Well, its off to another year on the

rodeo trail.

In case any of you are wondering about the Home Department, unfortunately the Fire Department has declared Bear Valley Hall unsafe and it will be closed until further notice, therefore the December Home Department meeting was never held. Denise Donham reported that she is working on one for January and will pass on the details to me as soon as she settles them.

Well, only six more days to go until Christmas. Hope you’ve got all your shopping done! If you haven’t had a chance to do so yet, take a drive down Highway 25 to check out all the holiday lights. Many folks have some great

lights out again this year.

Until next week, enjoy the weather, and, if you have any news you’d like

to share, give me a call or e-mail me at
