Rains answer South County prayers

Well it’s about time! South County finally got pounded by a beautiful rain storm last weekend. Everyone I’ve seen or talked to is in the best mood I’ve seen them in for a very long time. As long as it keeps up and stays fairly warm, it may end up to be a decent year after all.

Some rain reports came in as follows: John and Marianne Madson on Hwy 198 reported 1.80 inches for the weekend, Les and Betty Sans reported 2.00, Alex and Stacey Schmidt at the Pine Rock Ranch reported 3.30, Bill and Robin Rist on Lonoak Road measured in at 2.17, Traci Eggleston measured 3.50 up in Lewis Creek, Hec Hurley at the Topo Ranch Headquarters reported 2.10 while Todd and I got 2.80 here at home. Pat and Michelle Muzinich were hammered with a whopping 4.0 inches up in the Pine Canyon area. J.D and Denise Donham reported 3.9 inches at their place, Cynnie O’Connor reported 4 inches and John and Darlene Maggini measured in at 3 inches. Any time you’d like to share your rain measurements, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me as lots of folks are interested in rain reports from different areas.

Stacey Schmidt, one of South County’s favorite photographers, had a beautiful 2008 calendar printed up as Christmas gifts for some of her friends and family. We were one of the lucky recipients of this beautiful calendar. The calendar features “Ranch Life” photos from local brandings and ranches. Some of those featured in the calendar are Wyatt Bourdet, Lacey Taliafferro and Doad Hext. Some of the best photos in the calendar are of little Tristan Schmidt. I told Stacey she needed to do one for next year and sell them at the local feed stores, they would be a huge hit with the locals. She may have a few of this years left over, if you get in touch with her, you may be lucky enough to get one of her first editions of what is hopefully an annual calendar.

Me, Todd and the kids headed to town last Wednesday evening to watch the King City High Boys Varsity basketball game. Since League games will be starting soon, this was our only opportunity to go in to watch Rory Johnsen (our nephew) play. They played against Pajaro Valley in a very exciting, comeback game. We thought we were in for a butt whipping when the boys were down by 22 points, but, they made an awesome comeback and tied the game in the final minutes of the game. Unfortunately, Pajaro pulled off the win by one basket in the final seconds of the game. It was an exciting change of pace from watching girls’ basketball. I thought the girls were fast, but the boys are much faster and very physical. A very impressive game was played by Jimmy Barbree, Jeremy Allred, Rory Johnsen, Colby Williams and Brysan Borzini.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were set to open up their league play last Friday night, but, due to the wonderful storm we had, both games were canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date. The teams will play this week in Gonzales and King City.

Happy Sweet 16 Birthday wishes go out to Kelsey Padilla who celebrated her birthday last weekend.

Have a great week, enjoy the weather but keep praying for more rain, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
