Fair season starts in South County
It’s that time of year again, the Salinas Valley Fair kicks off
next week in King City. I wonder what the weather will be like next
week. It was so hot last year at the fair that a few animals didn’t
make it through the week. This year has been so strange, I don’t
know what to expect

It’s that time of year again, the Salinas Valley Fair kicks off next week in King City. I wonder what the weather will be like next week. It was so hot last year at the fair that a few animals didn’t make it through the week. This year has been so strange, I don’t know what to expect – wind, rain or heat! The California High School Rodeo Association, District 4, held their final event of the year last weekend at the Posse Grounds in Salinas. Some of those participating from South County included Ashley Jansen, Dreux Clark, Sierra Jo Sans, Blane and Blair Strohn, Rob Regan, Cheyenne Rey and Clayton Bacon. Congratulations to Sierra for earning the Cowgirl Rookie of the Year title.

Bitterwater Tully School held it’s spring concert and dessert auction last Monday at the school. Some of those enjoying the evening from the community included Jim Smith, Laurence and Donna Hansen and Jeff and Jean Schmidt. The 7th and 8th grade students prepared and auctioned off some delicious casseroles and desserts to help fund their eighth grade trips. J.W. Brewen was the auctioneer and he was able to bring in quite of bit of money for the fundraiser.

Last Friday afternoon, some Bitterwater students competed in the Chalone Peaks Middle School track meet that was held at King City High School. Those participating in the track meet were Taylor Jo Hurley, Jensen McFarland, Michael Kreihbel, Wacey Barrington and Brody Sans. The kids did great and each came home with several ribbons for their efforts. Their next track meet will be the small schools track meet, hosted by San Lucas School May 22, at King City High School.

Entries for the 76th Annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo are now available online at sanbenitocountyrodeo.com. They have a great Web site so be sure to check it out. The dates for the rodeo are June 26-28th at Bolado Park in Tres Pinos. New this year is the opening up of bull riding and bronc riding to surrounding counties if the entries do not fill up with county residents first. We may see some good action this year with more participants involved. Mutton busting for kids 6 & under has been added as well.

Have a great week, and don’t forget your Mom this weekend as Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10th. And, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
