Dog days heat up South County
Whew, was it a hot one last week out here in Bitterwater.
Hopefully this week will be a little bit cooler. The mornings have
been feeling a bit like fall, but boy did it get hot in the
afternoons. Seems like it’s always like that the first few weeks
school is back in session.

Whew, was it a hot one last week out here in Bitterwater. Hopefully this week will be a little bit cooler. The mornings have been feeling a bit like fall, but boy did it get hot in the afternoons. Seems like it’s always like that the first few weeks school is back in session.

Hope you all had a nice Labor Day weekend. College football kicked off over the weekend and there were some great games played. Sierra Jo went to the Cal vs. Michigan game last Saturday night in Berkeley with Doug, Jake, Tommy, Nick and Janie Stephens. It was the first college game she ever attended and boy was it an exciting one. She had a great time and is anxious to go to some more. Jeff and Jean Schmidt attended the game as well. Jeff is a Cal alumnus so they attend many of the Cal home games.

Todd and I headed off on our first official vacation in 16 years last week. Todd entered the Elko, Nev., Hot Iron Team Branding at the Elko Fair with Wyatt Bourdett, John Rianda and Kent Hirdes. If you’ve never been to that branding, it is one you should try to attend at least once. They do things a lot different there but it was a real good branding. They had 36 teams entered in the branding and they ran three teams at once in different pens. They branded 700-800 pound yearling heifers with a hot iron year brand. It was really good watching and a lot of fun. Our team didn’t have much luck this year but they’ve got it figured out for next year. We left last Tuesday and returned home on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and thanks a bunch to my mom for staying with the kids the whole week, and to Jo Ann for staying with the kids on the weekend. What would we all do without grandparents?

Of course the one time we finally get away, Buddy has to get hurt at football and get taken to the hospital for X-rays. Thankfully, his shoulder was only slightly separated and not broken as they feared. He’ll be out a few days then back in action soon.

Vern and Jo Ann Scattini took some of the kids to a branding last weekend in Avenal. Teaming up as partners were Brody and Vern and Jo Ann and Taylor Jo Hurley. The boys apparently won the first round while the girls whipped up and won the second round. They said they kids did great and they were very proud of them.

Candace and J.W. Brewen hosted a little barbecue last Sunday afternoon at their place. Some of those attending included Andy, Tamra, Mattie and Wacey Barrington, Larry Reeves, the Hurley family, the Sans family, the O’Connor family, John Brewen and Lou Harbin, Casey Sabin and Vern Scattini. Andy and Tamra then hosted another barbecue and swim party the following day at their home.

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting its annual Cattlemen’s Roping and Ranch Rodeo this weekend at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. The roping will be on Saturday, followed by a social hour and calcutta of the ranch rodeo teams on Saturday night, then, the ranch rodeo on Sunday. Be sure to stop by Saturday night to bid on your favorite team or to watch on Saturday or Sunday.

Have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
