Congratulations go out to James Flores and his 9 & under King City Little League All-Star team. They won the District 9 Championship title last week in Salinas. District 9 encompasses all of Salinas, Hollister and South County teams. The tournament is a double elimination and the team went undefeated before stumbling just a little by losing one game, then came back to win the championship in the final game. They defeated Hartnell twice for the Championship. Way to go, kids! Bittewater Tully’s Michael Kreihbel was one of the members on the team.
The 12-year-old All Stars are following the same route as the 9 year olds as they too went undefeated in their tournament before a loss on Sunday against Continental of Salinas. They will play for the Championship title Monday night in Salinas against Continental again. If they win, they will head to San Jose to play on Thursday for a chance to advance to the State Tournament down in Southern California. The 12 year olds are coached by Alan Umbarger, Tom Salcido and Danny Reyes. Bitterwater Tully’s Todd Sans Jr. is competing on that team as well. Good luck, boys. We know you can do it!
Blaine Strohn and Kristy Melton, of Hollister, just returned home from Gallup, N.M., where they were competing in the Wrangler Junior High Rodeo Association National Finals. Blane won the California State title in the boys goat tying while Kristy qualified in the ribbon roping. They both competed really well and helped represent California in fine fashion. The families had a great trip and made lots of new friends along the way.
Birthday wishes go out to J.W. Brewen who celebrated a birthday last week. A birthday BBQ was held in his honor last weekend at his home. Some of those stopping by to wish him a Happy Birthday included: Bob and Ann Hansen, Ross Rianda, Marilee and Ralphie Rianda, John and Susan Nino, Donna and Laurence Hansen, Jeff and Jean Schmidt, the Sabin Family, the Sans Family, the Barrington Family, the Hurley Family, the O’Connor family, John Brewen and Lou Harbin, Lynn Dodge and Vern and Joann Scattini.
The 3rd Annual Mel’s Poker Run took place last weekend in King City. The event honors Mel Bassetti and includes a motorcycle run from King City, around the lakes and back. A delicious lunch was served at the fairgrounds after the run, followed by a live and silent auction. Congratulations to the Basetti Family on another successful event.
We witnessed the most disgusting thing last Sunday evening in King City. As we were driving down Broadway, in broad daylight, a young teenage boy was walking down Broadway with a rifle in plain sight for everyone to see. There seemed to be some police activity going on further down the street and this young man was headed somewhere on a mission with this rifle in plain sight. We immediately called 911 to report him. We don’t know what happened after that as we high tailed it right out of town. It’s a pretty sad state that this town in coming to. I hope law enforcement officials can get this gang activity under control soon. Seems they are taking over our small town. And this happened right across from the high school parking lot. I’m afraid one day some innocent bystander is going to get caught in the cross fire of something. I sure hope they caught the kid who had the gun.
Hope your having a great summer, and, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at we********@ao*.com.
