Temperatures soar in South County for Salinas Rodeo

The heat is on out here in South County; temperatures have been soaring over 105 degrees for the past few days. Hopefully we’ll see some relief from the heat this week.

The 99th Annual Salinas Rodeo came and went last week and many South County residents took in some of the action. Twyster Hurley worked up there as the clown for the mutton busting all four days. He did a great job at it, too, and everyone who watched him commented on what a little showman he is. Of course, anyone who knows Twyster already knows that about him! Sierra Jo and Brody spent three days at the rodeo helping my mom in the contestant center, along with Natalie Madson and Brooke Tavernetti. Brody had a great time hanging out with all the pros during the rodeo, and even spending quite a bit of time roping the dummy with NFR qualifier Cash Myers.

Earl Escobar didn’t have to do too much persuading to talk Brody into getting into the cowhide race during Saturday afternoon’s performance, which they ended up winning! And congratulations to Shelly Franklin for winning second in the Non-Pro Bridle class on Friday evening. Next year the rodeo will celebrate its 100th year anniversary and big plans for the celebration are already under way. Next year will be a performance you won’t want to miss.

Condolences go out to the Earl Escobar family on the loss of his dad Eddie last week, right before the rodeo. Eddie spent many hours volunteering at the rodeo and he will definitely be missed by all his friends and family. Condolences also go out to the family of Treva Hurley who also passed away last week.

John and Susan Nino branded some calves last Sunday at the Dedini corrals in Wild Horse Canyon. Some of those helping out included the Massey Family, the Sans Family, the Brewen Family, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, the Nino family and Ryan Fitzpatrick. It was hot but thankfully we were done before it soared over the 105 mark.

Dean and Nikki Bell had an arena full the past few weekends as they have been spending the summer roping with family and friends. Dean’s brother John, along with his family, arrived last week from Paradise Valley, Nev., for a few days of vacation. Todd and I spent last Sunday with them roping and what a blast that was. I’ve never been to a “mud” roping before, but, thanks to Lila and Dawson Bell, I can say that I’ve been to one now! The kids came up with the great idea that the winners of each pot got to “mud” the losers of the pot. The kids had a blast mudding each other, and many grown ups up. Thankfully, we were never on the losing end of the roping, but we didn’t get to mud anyone up either! It could be a new trend though – some folks pay big money for mud spas these days!

There was a great turnout for the Virginia O’Connor Fire Relief Benefit last Sunday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.
