Bringing the masses to Bolado Park

Folks were busy in South County last week; there was a lot going on last week and there is a lot coming up for the remainder of September. Time is just flying by these days.

A huge congratulation goes out to Billy and Dana Aviles on producing such a successful PBR last Saturday night at Bolado Park. I have never seen the stands that full at Bolado. I don’t know what they did to fill the stands, but whatever it was, it was a huge success. Maybe it was the top-notch entertainment they brought in, both in the bull riders and the bulls. Maybe it was their advertising or maybe their low ticket prices. I do know that the kids and I thoroughly enjoyed the event and hope it continues on for many more years. It was really fun watching local cowboys and bulls compete right along with the top bulls and bull riders in the nation. San Benito County does produce top caliber cowboys and livestock, whether it be in the horse world or rough stock world.

The San Benito County Cattlewomen will be hosting their 4th annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon on Oct.11, at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. There will be fabulous door prizes and a raffle. Seating is limited so reserve your tickets now. For more information, contact Jayme Stewart at 637-7766.

Birthday wishes go out to Taylor Hurley who celebrated her birthday last Saturday, and to Candace Brewen who celebrated on the Sept. 8.

The Hurley Family and Vern and Jo Ann Scattini spent Labor Day weekend in Bridgeport for a holiday calf branding. Hec’s teams did real well as he placed 2nd and 3rd in the open branding while Vern’s team ended up 4th. Sounded like a fun weekend, one we may try to attend next year.

Elko, Nevada was the site of the annual hot iron branding over Labor Day weekend as well. Participating at the week-long event from South County were Todd Sans, Wyatt and Lacey Bourdet and John Rianda and Kyla Prunty. Lacey and Kyla’s ladies team qualified for the finals last Sunday, while unfortunatly, Todd, Wyatt, John and Kent Hirdes’ team was the last team eliminated in the Open branding last Wednesday. Todd was gone for the whole week, a first for him!

Many South County residents participated in a weekend barrel racing event at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. Some of those participating and winning a good chunk of money included Janel Flook, Cynthia Fancher, Ellie Porteur, Becky Doty, Betty Sans, The Donley Family, Kelly Bray and myself. The PacWest will be producing another big 3 day event in King City in February.

Have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
