A bit of rain and barbecues in South County
We had some April showers out here in South County last week. It
was a nice little shot of rain, but, unfortunately it came a little
too late for us. We, along with many others, have already started
shipping our cattle. I hope the rain can help others out, but, for
us it was just a little too late.

Congratulations go out to Cynnie O’Connor who recently completed and graduated from a certified nursing assistant program in King City. She started the class in February and completed it two weeks ago. She passed her test successfully last week and is now a certified nursing assistant. She and her husband, David, hosted a graduation barbecue for all her classmates last Saturday at their home. I drove the bus for her full-time while she was in school. Now, she’s back to driving full-time again. For all those who have gotten behind me on the road while I’ve been driving the bus, you’ll be happy that Cynnie is driving again so you won’t get stuck behind slow old me! Congratulations Cynnie, we’re all proud of you.

Get well wishes go out to Alma Carlsen who was under the weather last week and spent a few days in the hospital, and to Adeline Rianda who fell a few weeks ago and broke her wrist. After falling and breaking her wrist, she drove herself to the hospital and ended up having surgery that night. Hope you are both feeling better soon.

The Salinas Valley Fair hostess contest was held last Saturday at the fairgrounds in King City. Competing from King City was Meghan Cheney and from Salinas was Abbey Barrie. After a tough day of competition for both of the girls, Meghan was named First Runner-up while Abbey was crowned Miss Salinas Valley Fair 2007. During the program, several South County kids modeled in the fashion portion of the contest. Those modeling included: Tatum and Twyster Hurley, Ivy Rianda, Max and Owen Pozzi, Wade Garza and Emily and Kate Brewen. The kids were very entertaining and hopefully will be an added feature to future contests. The King City Young Farmers barbecued a delicious lunch for the contestants and their family and friends before the results were announced.  Congratulations to Marianne Madson for coordinating another very successful hostess contest.

The Salinas Valley Fair Kick-off Dinner Dance will be held this Saturday at the fairgrounds. The event will take place in the Topo Ranch Event Center beginning at 6:00 p.m. and will feature a steak dinner, silent and live auction and dancing to the Shan Johnson Band. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased at the fairgrounds.

After reading my column last week in regards to the rattlesnakes being out in full force, Debbie DeMers from the Hollister Veterinary Clinic notified me that there is a rattlesnake vaccine now available for dogs. It requires one shot, followed by a booster one month later, then, a yearly shot. Sure wish they had a vaccine like that available for humans!

Hope you all got your taxes done on time, have a great week and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
