San Benito rodeo action under way
Happy Summer everyone! Summer has officially arrived although
the weather would indicate otherwise. Seems more like spring or
fall than summer, but I’ll take it the way it is
– not too hot and just a little cool. It does sound like it’s
going to heat up a little this week though, just in time for the
Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo!

The Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo at Bolado Park officially kicked off last weekend with some pre-rodeo events. The Memorial roping events took place last Saturday at Bolado Park while the figure 8 eliminations and jackpot ropings were held on Sunday. Winners of Saturdays events were: Jerrod Renz – figure 8 Champion; Todd Utterback and Shawn Smith – sort and rope champions; Todd Sans, Hec Hurley, Carlos Castillo and Franklin Rocha – ranch doctoring champions; and J.W. Brewen, Lee Whitney, Mark Fancher and Joe Spencer – calf branding champions. There was a five-way tie for the all-around champion based on points earned, so by breaking it down to high money winner, Shane Higgins walked away with the all-around for the day. Congratulations to all winners.
The figure 8 eliminations were held on Sunday, followed by the pre-rodeo jackpot ropings. Todd Sans and Dean Bell were the high money header and heeler for the day, each taking home a nice headstall for their efforts.
The Rodeo begins this Friday night at Bolado Park, followed by performances on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. There will be a wine tasting held on Friday evening before the performance, open to the public, a family style barbecue Saturday evening after the performance and a western trade show taking place the entire weekend. Be sure to come out to Bolado Park to take in some fun, family oriented rodeo action.
Many South County kids spent last week in Bishop competing at the California State High School Rodeo Finals. Congratulations to Dreux Clark for earning another trip to the National Finals in New Mexico for placing in the top four in the pole bending.
Megan Melton had a great week as she ended up fifth in the state for goat tieing. Congratulations also to Rob Regan, Blane Strohn and Alyssa Ferguson for qualifying and competing at the finals.
I hope all you dads out there had a great Father’s Day last Sunday. Many dads spent the day at the figure-8 eliminations and roping with their family.
All-Star baseball action is in full swing in South County and in Hollister. Little League teams have been playing for awhile now, while Pony action begins in July. Be sure to check with your favorite ball player on times and locations of their games.
