Editor,

As a Special Education teacher I object to your referring to the Certificate of Completion as a fig leaf for failure. You fail to say what reasonable accommodations you think should be made for Special Education students.

Many of my students work harder than many regular education students but will never pass the exit exam no matter what accommodations are made. Are you saying they shouldn’t be allowed to walk? They deserve to walk. They have completed all the course work to the best of their ability. Many have attempted the exam numerous times.

We discussed your editorial in class and the general consensus was that your editorial was ill thought out. Calling the Certificate of Completion, which is in itself a huge accomplishment for some Special Education students a “failure” was incredibly insensitive. My students may not read at grade level, but some have a far higher ability to be sensitive to others feelings that you obviously do.
