A man working on the West Marine building in Hollister sustained major trauma when he burst through the roof and fell about 30 feet.

The accident at West Marine, 2395 Bert Drive, occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 27, according to the Hollister Fire Department, which responded.

The employee with Mountain View-based Waterproofing Associates had been repairing dry rot on the two-story distribution warehouse with other workers when he broke through the roof and fell. Calstar transported him to a Bay Area hospital.

Waterproofing Associates President Dennis Ryan said the worker had been with the company for “not that long” and was working as an apprentice while going to school.

“Yeah, he’s pretty good,” Ryan said of his condition. “He’s doing really good.”

Ryan said the company’s “sympathies are with Omar and his family.”

The company still is determining what caused the accident.

“Safety’s a big deal here – it’s something we really focus on,” Ryan said.

West Marine responded that day by sending all of its employees home. No other workers were injured from West Marine or Waterproofing Associates.

West Marine earlier this year extended its lease through 2021 at the 240,000 square-foot Hollister location, with an option to extend it another five years.
