Students from high schools in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties will participate in the first “beg, borrow and deal” event that raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network and an area school.

The event was originally scheduled for October, but event planners weren’t ready in time. This time, beg, borrow and deal will take place the last weekend of April. Also, the rules are much more relaxed.

“It’s just like a scavenger hunt. You get to go to different places, do different things and have a lot of fun doing something for other people,” said Kaj Helding, event coordinator and member of the Monterey Peninsula Kiwanis Club. The club is presenting the event.

To win, students will be given 50 tasks and will try to complete as many as possible over a two-day period. The team with the most tasks completed wins. Teams have to stay together at all times.

Teams of up to three students find sponsors to raise money. For every $100 team members raise, they are credited one completed task. Also, the team with the most sponsor dollars raised earns a free dinner at the Monterey Beach Hotel.

High schools can have more than one team per school. On Friday, April 23, the teams get a list of 50 tasks. Examples of tasks include “cleaning your room to your parents’ satisfaction” or “taking a photo on the steps of city hall,” Helding said.

“Students can earn community service hours for doing this,” he said.

Tasks will be validated by on-lookers or the students themselves, Helding said. Rewards from the fund-raiser will be evenly split between the Children’s Miracle Network and the winning team’s school of choice.

Applications are due April 1 and can be obtained by calling or e-mailing Helding at 801-1083 or [email protected]. Students will pick up the list of tasks April 23 at the Monterey Beach Hotel between 4 and 7 p.m. Lists are due back at the hotel by 4 p.m. April 25.
