after a long battle with cancer. She was 45.
Mrs. Martens was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Willow
Glen Area of San Jose. She moved to Gilroy in 1980.

Carrie Lee “Bird” (Giuffre) Martens of Gilroy died in San Jose on Jan. 6, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. She was 45.

Mrs. Martens was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Willow Glen Area of San Jose. She moved to Gilroy in 1980.

Mrs. Martens was a cheerleader at Willow Glen High School and attended San Jose State after graduation. Besides her family and friends, her greatest passion was fitness and nutrition. She taught aerobics and personal fitness for more than 20 years. She last worked as the Fitness Director at Gilroy Health and Fitness.

She is survived by her husband, Dane Martens of Gilroy, and her children Sheena and Logan Martens both of Gilroy. She also is survived by her parents, Thomas and

Ada Giuffre of San Jose, her sister Robin Denton of San Jose and aunt Lindsay Denton of San Jose. She is also survived by numerous loving friends and family members.

The funeral is Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Church in Gilroy. Burial will follow under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Mrs. Martens’ wishes are that everyone attending her funeral wear bright clothing (no dark colors) in celebration of her life. She also requested that everyone to bring to the service a photo of themselves so she will be surrounded by her friends and family. Please arrive early so that all photos can be placed around the casket before services begin.
