‘Baler boys and girls beat up on Vikings to close out regular
season
Salinas – The San Benito High track team wrapped up the 2005 regular season with overall wins as both the boys’ and the girls’ squads were victorious over North Salinas on Thursday.
The girls easily won 90-47 while the boys took a 117-19 blowout win over the Vikings.
“It was great to finish off the dual meets with a big win,” said boys’ head coach Iran White. “We’ve got a lot of kids who are really stepping it up and hitting their peak at the right time.”
One of the bright spots for the boys on Thursday was the contribution made by Jesse Grace, who was competing for the first time this season.
Grace scored a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, one inch, good enough for first place.
Jeff Weltz also had a big showing in the 100-meter run with a time of :10.9, giving the Haybalers two threats in the event who can run it in under 11 seconds, along with Hollister speedster Chuck Thompson.
On the girls’ side, Hollister’s Crystina Osborne had one of the day’s best performances in any event. Osborne obliterated her previous best distance of 107-feet in the discus by tossing a 119-footer on Thursday, not only improving on her CCS distance, but cementing herself as a contender for best in league at the event.
Teammate Johni Kieswetter is also making vast improvements in the discus, breaking the 107-foot mark for the first time to finish in second on Thursday behind Osborne.
Dani Andrewson once again dominated her field events, taking first in the long jump, triple jump and the high jump.
Ashley Patton tied for first place in the pole vault and took second in both the high jump and the long jump behind Andrewson.
Amanda Boyd had another big day, easily taking first in the mile, the 800-meter and the 200-meter. Boyd also anchored the mile relay and put together a great leg to give Hollister a come-from-behind win.
