The Hollister Target store on Airline Highway plans to start an April expansion that would include a pharmacy and more grocery space, and the city Planning Commission on Thursday will consider the proposal.
The expansion would add about 17,500 square feet to the store.
Other changes would include moving the garden section out toward Airline Highway, improving the facade and extending the storefront toward the parking lot an additional 1,000 square feet, according to Planning Commissioner Charles Scott.
He believes Target’s plans coincide with efforts to better compete with other chain stores, he said, such as Wal-Mart and its “superstores” popping up throughout the country.
The Gilroy City Council recently approved the first Wal-Mart superstore in Northern California, with an expected spring of 2005 completion.
Target management could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Hollister’s state-ordered building moratorium would not affect the construction, because the plans don’t include additional sewer hook-ups, according to a staff report.
“Because they don’t change their bathrooms or anything,” said Scott, who supports the changes.
If the Planning Commission approves the proposal Thursday at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, the City Council would consider a final approval.
