Dear Editor,

As far as I know, waterboarding is a procedure used usually to gain information from the victim. The victim experiences drowning by water even to the extent of water entering the lungs – a very fearful experience.

The confirmation of Michael B. Mukasey as the new attorney general of the U.S. appeared to be all but certain Friday after two key Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee announced they would support the nomination despite complaints over Mr. Mukasey’s refusal to clarify his views on what amounts to be torture. The two key Democrats who support Judge Mukasey’s nomination to attorney general are Sen. Feinstein (a Democrat) and Sen. Schumer (a Democrat). Senator Feinstein’s action doesn’t surprise too many of us, but many of we Democrats were surprised and disappointed by Sen. Schumer’s action.

Three Republican presidential candidates – Giuliani, Romney and Thompson – have not voiced an opinion against waterboarding. The only leading Republican candidate to condemn waterboarding is Sen. John McCain.

Senator McCain speaks out on waterboarding: “It is not a complicated procedure. It is torture”.

When we sink to the level of the people we fight – the only people we hurt are ourselves.
