Once in a while, you really hope a new movie will be good because you are intrigued by the premise, “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” currently playing at Premiere Cinemas, is one of those movies.

And that is why this movie was ultimately so disappointing for me.

While a lot of other kids were outside burning bugs with magnifying glasses, I was reading about all of these characters. Yes. Much of it went over my head and I didn’t truly understand it until I was older. But I knew more about those characters than I knew about who was president or running the government.

So when I heard about this movie, I was really hoping it would be good, but it wasn’t.

But that does not mean that there are not some things to like about this movie. There are several things in this movie that are entertaining, Director Stephen Norrington packed this movie with action , gun play and fighting to keep the average action fan on the edge of their seat.

There are also some superior special effects that blend in almost seamlessly to enhance a visually rich picture but the best part of this movie is Sean Connery. Even at the age of 73, its his presence on screen that holds this sometimes confusing plot together.

The plot centers around a dangerous character known only as the Phantom, who is threatening to plunge Europe into a world war.

Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, and adapted by James Dale Robinson, “League” is about an extraordinary consortium made up of adventurer Allen Quatermain (Connery), Capt. Nemo, Dorian Gray, Mina Harker (from “Dracula”), the Invisible Man and Dr. Jekyll – are brought together to save the world from this power-hungry madman. Also going along for the ride is an American agent named Sawyer, presumably a grown-up Tom Sawyer.

Around the corner are the tank, the submarine, handheld machine guns and chemical warfare. By showing the characters’ anxieties about the destructive possibilities of the 20th century, the movie reminds us of current anxieties concerning society’s destructive capabilities.

This film contains extended scenes of gun and sword violence.
