On Friday afternoon the Free Lance crackled with an energy rarely felt in these parts. It was as though bees had been let loose from a jar and were stinging with rumors and stories so crazy they could not be believed.

Celebrities were coming to town! A rock star! A rock star and his celebrity wife who was a “Baywatch” babe!

It couldn’t be true. Not here in Hollister. Who would come here, what with our sewage treatment problems and the cancellation of the biker rally?

But the bees kept stinging. Kid Rock was coming to town! And he was bringing Pamela Anderson and they were going to get married – even though they exchanged vows a few days before in Nashville – and he was going to perform at The Cantina in Tres Pinos and hang out at Leal Vineyards and maybe bring some hockey star pals or other buff types along with him. And a local bakery/deli made a wedding cake for them.

It couldn’t be true, but it was. The Kid, whose real name is Bob Ritchie, and his bride flew in, hung out, and rocked out for a little while with a band made up of guys from Gilroy and Hollister. And people went crazy. They took pictures on their cell phones. Cars lined the roadways leading to Leal Vineyards. Band members said that although they didn’t, you know, really get to talk to Kid and Pam, they seemed real down-to-earth and were nice to everyone.

Then the celebrities left and we were left with some really cool memories, and our sewage treatment challenges. And by all accounts a good time was had by all. There were no pyrotechnic accidents at the club and no one got crushed or anything. The celebrity newlyweds drank local wine out of local glasses.

And hopefully the celebrities will recall that they were treated really well in San Benito County. As the guitarist for the local band said, Hollister had something to prove.

“We didn’t want them to leave without hearing that Hollister can freakin’ rock,” he said.

We hope everyone proved his freakin’ point.

So it did happen. Celebrities stopped by. And partied. And were nice and showed everyone a good time. That’s just plain fun.

And if anyone gives you a bad time about nothing ever happening here, you just tell them “Dude, Kid Rock played here. And Pamela came with him. Hollister rocked.”
