Hurray for Saturday and the return of the Crimson Crusader. Got a question, need an answer? Call the Red Phone, always waiting, always online, always at 635-9219.

What about the mailbox

A few weeks ago the Red Phone received a call from a resident concerned about the absence of mail drop-box on the corner of Sixth and San Benito streets. The box had been missing since the Redevelopment Agency installed new sidewalks downtown. RDA Director Billy Avera said the post office was planning to bring the box back and postal supervisor Kulwinder Singh agreed. But not so said Hollister Postmaster Judy Dunfield. She said the box was removed because it wasn’t being used enough and the post office has no plans to bring it back. A drop-box must receive at least 25 pieces of mail to remain in operation and, Dunfield said, that box only received an average of 9 to 12 pieces of mail daily. She did say, however, residents are welcome to use the drop box at Fifth and Monterey streets near the courthouse.

Landscaping limbo

The atrocious landscaping outside of the post office should be improving soon, Dunfield added. She said the U.S. Postal Service recently increased the landscaping budget to get a handle on the weeds flourishing outside of the post office.

“They started working,” she said. “They’ll be out again working Sunday as long as it is not raining.”

Dunfield refused to comment on how much money the post office is spending on the landscaping, but did say, “It’s enough to remove the weeds.”

“The hold-up was first funding and second weather,” she said.
