Registration for fall classes at Gavilan College will come to a close this Thursday, and courses are filling up quickly at the Hollister site.
“Students are finding out there are more and more classes being offered here in Hollister, and they’re finally taking advantage of it,” said Judy Rodriguez, of Gavilan College.
The college is adding 70 sections this fall after reducing about 100 class sections last year.
This semester, Gavilan is offering a new computer science class, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, which explores using computer-based tools to analyze and manage spatial information.
“It’s really a growing part of business now – global positioning and geographic information systems,” said Jan Bernstein-Chargin, a spokesperson for the college. “There’s more and more demand for these skills so we wanted to make sure it was something we had available to our students.”
At the Hollister site, located at the Briggs Building, at the corner of San Benito and Fourth streets, Rodriguez said, the core classes such as psychology, English, Spanish and history are filling up quickly.
Students may register at the Briggs Building today through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then in the evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students may register in person at each Gavilan location, or by calling the phone-in registration at 408-846-3729. To register over the phone, students must use a credit card to pay class fees.
The lines have been short, and the paperwork has been moving quickly, so Rodriguez said, it’s a good time to come down and sign up for classes.
“While late registration does go through the 20th, we would encourage people to register as early as possible,” Chargin said.
