Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are reminding everyone to drive safely during the winter season by taking the following steps:

– Reduce your speed in the early morning hours in areas where black ice may develop. Black ice usually forms when temperatures are below 40 degrees between 5 am and 7 am. Bridges, underpasses and low or shaded areas are areas were Black Ice may occur.

– Reduce your speed during rainy conditions especially when Caltrans workers, law enforcement or tow truck drivers are working near the roadway.

– Be aware of electronic message boards and other road signs alerting the public of changing road conditions, lane closures or detours.

– Make sure your brakes, windshield wiper blades and tires are in good working order.

– Inspect your head and tail lights so you have maximum visibility on the highway.

The public may view traffic conditions on the state highway system by viewing the Caltrans network of roadside traffic cameras at: http://video.dot.ca.gov/

In addition, motorists may call the automated California Highway Information Network (CHIN) at 1-800-GAS-ROAD (1-800-427-7623) to get current conditions for any highway in the state.
