The annual Spotlight on Hollister and San Benito County Expo and Job Fair May 13 included a variety of business and nonprofit booths inside the Veterans Memorial Building, with other booths set up in tents out front of the building for employers offering jobs.

The event included 70 businesses and nonprofits, with 28 of those offering at least 75 job openings.

“It’s been extremely busy,” said Lorena Victorino, of Gilroy Gardens. “We’ve run out of applications.”

The job fair was organized by the One-Stop Career Center and the San Benito Health and Human Services Agency. Those involved estimated that 1,600 people perused the job fair, not suprising given the 22 percent unemployment rate in San Benito County.

“I didn’t think it would be so many people at all times,” said David Montes, of the One-Stop Career Center. “It usually goes in waves – it’s been steady throughout.”
