Book series likely to draw viewers to film

Spending a day at San Benito High School, it can be easily seen that the “Twilight” book series has captured the hearts and minds of students. Students sport shirts, carry photos in their binders, and have discussions before – and sometimes during – class about the “Twilight” Series.

“It was very capturing and so well written that it was just brought to life,” said Warda Alam, a senior at San Benito High School. “I just fell in love with the book.”

The series focuses on the love story of Bella and Edward. “Twilight” is nothing near the average love story. While Bella is an average teenage girl, Edward is a vampire. The story centers on them falling deeply in love, but they have trouble dealing with the fact that Edward is particularly attracted to the scent of her blood.

With the adaptation of the first novel into a film out today, Nov. 21, the popularity of the series has increased so much that the soundtrack to “Twilight” went No.1 before the movie was even released. The rock band Paramore even wrote and recorded the song “Decode” especially for the film.

Though the series of books has not sold more than the “Harry Potter” series, according to CBS News, global sales for the “Twilight” series have topped 17 million.

Recently the stars of the film went on a tour to promote the new movie that subsequently led to chaos. According to TMZ, an online entertainment site, Robert Pattinson (who plays the character Edward) was scheduled to appear at a Hot Topic in San Francisco. Publicists expected a turn out of 300-500 fans. When the day came, more than 3,000 “Twilight” fans showed up early in the morning. So many people showed up not everyone got in to meet the star. It led to a riot and fans were trampled.

Many vampire books and movies already exist but this one has local people hyped.

“I just think it is an amazing story that’s a nice break from everyday boring life,” said SBHS Senior Cameron Angelo. “Everyone wishes to have the kind of relationship between Edward and Bella, and really there’s no reason not to like the book.”

“Twilight” opened with a special viewing at midnight, and continues with showings throughout the weekend in Hollister.
