Two small earthquakes hit areas south of Hollister over the past few days, following a stretch of relatively quiet temblor activity.

A magnitude-3.1 earthquake hit an area north of Pinnacles National Monument on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck about 3 miles north/northwest of the monument, and about 23 miles southeast of Hollister, according to the USGS Web site. It occurred shortly after 3 a.m.

The first of the two latest quakes occurred at 7:19 p.m. Monday. It was about 6 miles south of Tres Pinos and about 10 miles southeast of Hollister, according to the USGS.

Though activity has been quiet in recent months, the same area of San Benito County about four months ago had experienced a string of smaller quakes, which caused no serious damage.
