Blended families, blended wines age well
When my husband and I met and married some 27 years ago, we brought our young daughters from previous marriages - his one, Sarah, and my two, Tara and Lindsey - and became a blended family. Mark and Sarah’s personalities are robust and structured while my girls and I are a little more fruity and complex. (Note: Mark especially agrees with the fruity description.) Our differences cause the usual squabbles but in the end, we are a great balance for each other. Our girls are all grown up now and it’s such fun when we all get together. Like a fine wine, our blended family has aged well.

Anticipating a bountiful grape harvest
By the way our grapes are ripening fast and early, this year's harvest is going to be a bountiful, good year. To test for ripeness, most winemakers use a refractometer, a hand-held device that measures the brix (sugar content) of grapes, letting them know when the grapes are ready to be picked. Different grape varietals ripen at different times and at different vineyards. For instance, Chardonnay, Viognier and Pinot Noir grapes tend to ripen earliest - in September - with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon typically among the last grapes to be picked, well into October.

Cats now ‘top dog’ in our homes
There’s an old saying that tells us a dog is man’s best friend. But new statistics indicate that this just ain’t so anymore. Today, the pet dog population in the United States is more than 67 million. But listen to this; there are more than 83 million cats living with human companions. Those darn cats. Somehow, they snuck up and took over as the most popular pet in America. Only fish outnumber them (there are an estimated 170 million pet fish in the United States), but that’s only because a lot of fish can fit in one small aquarium. So it seems that cats have it when it comes to being “top dog” in our homes.
