San Benito County’s unemployment rate rose to 22.1 percent in February, while the state’s jobless rate held at 12.5 percent, according to data recently released by the California Employment Development Department.

The U.S. unemployment rate of 9.7 percent was also unchanged in February – the most recent month for which data is available.

The state’s jobless rate, which is derived from a federal survey of 5,500 California households, was 10.2 percent at this time a year ago.

The data shows an increase of 34,000 in the number of employed people throughout the state during February – just more than 15.8 million, compared to January. That number is down 606,000 from the employment total in February of last year.

The number of people unemployed in California was just more than 2.2 million, which is up 5,000 from the previous month and up by 406,000 compared to February 2009.

In San Benito County’s labor force of 27,100 adults, 21,100 were employed in February.

During the past six months, the local jobless rate has increased from 12.5 percent in September to 13.7 percent in October, 15.1 percent in November, 18.5 percent in December, 20.9 percent in January and 22.1 percent in February.
