Community Services and Workforce Development has funds available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help low-income residents with their PG&E bills. Qualifying residents who meet the eligibility requirements may be eligible for an annual credit from $183 to $310.
For 2011 a family of four with a monthly income that does not exceed $3,985.16 may qualify. A family of two with a monthly income that does not exceed $2,709.91 may qualify. For all family size-to-income eligibility, call the CSWD at 637-9293.
LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides a one-time annual assistance to needy low-income households for utility bill payments. They are distributed to each state and individual states administer the programs and fund distribution. The program pays partial energy bills for eligible families by making payments directly to the local utility company. It is given out on a first come, first served basis to residents are encouraged to apply early.
Residents who qualify may also be eligible for the Weatherization Assistance Program, which helps low-income families reduce their energy costs. It provides for home improvements such as insulating walls and ceilings, repairing broken windows, caulking and weatherproofing and by replacing inefficient heating and cooling appliances.
The application for the programs is available at the CSWD officers, 1111 San Felipe Road, Ste. 108, in Hollister, or online at www.sbcjobs.org/services. Regular bills and 15-day notices are accepted Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to noon. 48-hour and shut-off notices are accepted Monday through Friday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
To be approved, residents need to show proof of citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, passport, naturalization or resident card; 30-day income verification of all household members; photo ID of all adult household members, social security cards of all household members; and a current utility bill or shut off notice.
The program serves 1,200 families a year.
