Early returns show that newcomer Sergio Montanez has a slight

on the Hollister City Council, according to unofficial results.

In the race for District 3 council, Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia had a big lead over challenger Scott McPhail.
The results are the first ones released after polls closed at 8 p.m. and include the vote-by-mail ballots.
In District 2, Montanez gained 37 percent, or 174 votes. Scattini had 34.3 percent, or 161 votes. And Guzman had received 27.9 percent, or 131 votes. Guzman is an electrician. Montanez is an accountant.
The three candidates are vying to succeed Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez in the district representing Hollister’s west side.
Over in District 3, representing the south-central side, Valdivia had gained 69.9 percent, or 441 votes. McPhail had received 29.6 percent, or 187 votes, according to the first results released. McPhail is known for being director of the medical marijuana dispensary that has battled city officials in court.
